COMPTON, Calif.—A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dog was recovering and “resting comfortably” April 18 after being shot by an assault suspect during a search in Compton.

“During the course of the search, the suspect discharged his firearm, which struck K9 ‘Kjeld’ resulting in an injury,” according to a social media post by the sheriff’s department. “Fortunately, K9 Kjeld, who was equipped with a bulletproof vest, underwent successful treatment and has since been discharged from veterinary care.”

The confrontation occurred Wednesday night near Spruce Street in Compton, where deputies were working to arrest a suspect for assault with a deadly weapon, sheriff’s officials said.

“The suspect was subsequently apprehended without any further escalation,” sheriff’s officials said. “K9 Kjeld’s actions stand as a testament to his valor and dedication.”

Sheriff’s officials said Kjeld “saved the lives of our deputies and the suspect who shot at him.”

Kjeld, who is referred to as “Kid” by his police partners, has been with the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau since January 2023.

“Our entire LASD family wish him a speedy recovery at home,” according to the sheriff’s department.
