SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Roe Pressley, a company vice president who wears a ‘few hats,’ attended Shen Yun’s evening show with his mother on March 27 at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo.

Though he had heard of the Shen Yun company several years ago, this was the first time he got the chance to see the performance.

“It was very eye-opening and one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a long time,” he exclaimed.

“I don’t remember the last time I saw a dance performance, but it was nothing like this. This is like nothing else in the world.”

The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.
For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.
The dream of Shen Yun artists is to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Mr. Pressley couldn’t agree more with this mission.

He loved that Shen Yun depicted themes of “preservation of traditional culture, anti-communism, pro-freedom, and enlightenment.”

“It was very well done. I knew almost nothing about [traditional Chinese culture] aside from what I’ve read in my Buddhist handbook, which I’m only about a third of the way through,” he said.

“So, this is a lot of culture packed into only two hours and 15 minutes. [There are] a lot of breadcrumbs to follow where I can learn more.”

For its 2024 touring season, Shen Yun’s eight equally-sized companies will be performing in over 200 cities across five continents.

Met with wide acclaim since its establishment in 2006, the company can be expected to return each year with a brand-new set of choreography and musical compositions.

Regarding Shen Yun’s story-dance featuring the ancient Chinese meditation practice Falun Dafa—whose followers adhere to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance—Mr. Pressley said he had purchased a book to learn more.

“I’ve been practicing transcendental meditation for just about a year now myself. So, this is right up my alley, and I look forward to enriching my knowledge about traditions.”

If given a chance to speak to Shen Yun performers, Mr. Pressley would like to tell all of them that “You guys were fabulous.”
“It was so beautiful. The musicians were outstanding—both the orchestra and the musicians on stage,” he said.

“Keep up the great work, and there are lots of people who need to see this. I’ll do my best to spread the word for you.”
